What is the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)?

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an international agreement adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979. It is also known as the Women’s Bill of Rights and is widely considered to be the most comprehensive international codification of women’s rights available. The Convention addresses a broad range of civil, political, economic, and social rights. It prohibits discrimination against women in all its forms, including discrimination based on sex, nationality, race, and religion. It also requires governments to take appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in all areas, such as political participation, education, health care, and employment. In New Hampshire, the ratification process of CEDAW has been ongoing for several years. In 2018, lawmakers passed a resolution in support of ratifying CEDAW, and in 2019, a bill was introduced in the state legislature to ratify CEDAW. Although the bill passed through committee, it ultimately failed to pass the full legislature. As a result, New Hampshire has yet to officially ratify CEDAW. However, state officials continue to advocate for the ratification of the Convention and its principles remain a part of New Hampshire law.
