What is the International Law of the Sea?
The International Law of the Sea, often referred to as UNCLOS, is a comprehensive set of legal agreements that set out the rights and responsibilities of each nation in relation to the oceans, seas, and navigable bodies of water. It serves to protect coastal and other marine interests such as fishing, navigation, and the environment. UNCLOS was established in 1982 and applies to all of the world’s oceans and seas. UNCLOS defines the rights and responsibilities of nations in relation to the use of the oceans, including the rights to navigate, explore, use, protect, and manage natural resources. It also defines the limits of national sovereignty over territorial seas, EEZs (exclusive economic zones), and the continental shelf. The provisions of UNCLOS also cover marine environment protection, sovereignty over resources, prevention of ocean pollution, and the exploitation and management of marine resources. UNCLOS is considered very important in Colorado, as it recognizes the rights of local coastal communities to access and enjoy the resources of the ocean. It also strengthens the ability of the state to regulate activities such as fishing, shipping, and offshore energy production. These activities are vital to the economic health and environmental protection of coastal communities in Colorado.
