What is the International Court of Justice (ICJ)?
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the primary judicial branch of the United Nations (UN). It is based in The Hague, Netherlands, and is commonly referred to as the World Court. The ICJ is comprised of fifteen judges from a wide variety of countries and legal systems, and provides the only judicial forum for international disputes. The ICJ has jurisdiction over matters such as human rights, the peaceful settlement of disputes between countries, and the enforcement of international law. It is the only court capable of resolving international disputes involving multiple countries and issuing binding rulings on them. The ICJ also has the authority to order the payment of reparations for any harm done by one country to another. The ICJ is one of the most important international judicial bodies in the world. It is responsible for ensuring the enforcement of international law and upholding human rights. Its decisions are binding and can have far-reaching consequences for countries around the world. While the ICJ is not able to issue enforceable decisions for countries like New Jersey, it is an important part of the international legal system and can be a powerful tool for helping to resolve global disputes.
