What is personal injury protection insurance?

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Insurance is a type of insurance that is required in the State of Texas. It is designed to provide financial protection for medical expenses and lost wages as a result of a motor vehicle accident. PIP generally covers 80 percent of reasonable and necessary medical and rehabilitation expenses, as well as 60 percent of lost income due to an inability to work. It also covers up to $5,000 in death benefits. PIP insurance is sometimes referred to as "no-fault" insurance because it does not require you or another driver to be held at fault to receive coverage. Instead, it is applicable regardless of fault and will provide coverage on behalf of the insured person. PIP insurance is often offered as part of an auto insurance policy or as an optional add-on. Texan drivers should familiarize themselves with the PIP insurance coverage requirements and speak with their insurance agent to ensure they have enough protection. It is important to note that PIP insurance does not cover damages to a vehicle, so drivers may need to purchase additional coverage to protect their vehicle.
