What is uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage?

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM) is a type of insurance coverage in Maryland that provides financial protection for car accident victims who are injured by a driver who carries no auto insurance or does not carry enough insurance to pay for all of the damages caused by the accident. This type of coverage is mandatory in Maryland. This means that all Maryland drivers must carry UM/UIM coverage. It includes both bodily injury coverage as well as property damage coverage. Bodily injury coverage is designed to help pay for expenses such as medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other expenses related to injury. Property damage coverage is designed to help cover the costs of repairing or replacing your vehicle due to the accident. UM/UIM coverage is there to protect you and your passengers in case of an accident with a driver who carries no auto insurance or doesn’t carry enough of it. It’s a valuable form of protection and can help take the financial burden off after a serious accident.
