What is the difference between an insurance policy and a bond?

An insurance policy and a bond are both contractual agreements but they serve two different purposes. An insurance policy is a contract between an insurance company and an insured. It promises to provide financial protection if certain events happen, such as damage to property or injury to someone. The insured pays the insurance company a premium and in return, the insurance company agrees to provide coverage for any damage or injury that is covered in the policy. A bond, on the other hand, is a contract between an individual or business (known as the principal) and a surety company. The surety company agrees to pay a third party if the principal fails to fulfill its obligations. Bonds are typically used as a form of security to guarantee that a principal will fulfill the terms of the agreement. For example, a contractor might take out a bond to guarantee that they will complete a project on time and within budget. In summary, insurance policies provide financial protection for losses or damages caused by events that are covered in the policy. Bonds provide financial security if the principal fails to fulfill its obligations under the agreement.
