What are the responsibilities of an insurance adjuster?

An insurance adjuster is responsible for inspecting, evaluating, and settling insurance claims. Insurance adjusters work with policyholders and other parties to ensure that all parties are in agreement. In New Jersey, insurance adjusters have one primary responsibility: to act in the best interests of their employer, the insurance company. Insurance adjusters investigate and assess the extent of any damage or loss that has occurred, and they also negotiate with the policyholder to reach an acceptable settlement. They review documents, inspect damaged property, speak to witnesses, and otherwise look for information to determine who or what caused the loss and the associated costs. Insurance adjusters are also responsible for helping policyholders understand their policies and coverage. They must be knowledgeable about the rules and regulations governing insurance policies in New Jersey, and they must also be able to explain those policies and coverage to policyholders. Finally, insurance adjusters must be able to clearly communicate with all parties in the claim, including policyholders, insurance companies, and other parties. This includes explaining any restrictions and exclusions that might exist within policy language and providing the necessary documentation so that the final claim can be paid.
