What type of coverage is included in auto insurance policies?
Auto insurance policies typically include several types of coverage. The most common types are Liability, Collision, Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist, and Comprehensive coverage. Liability coverage pays for any damages or injuries that you may cause to another person or their property in an accident. It also provides coverage for your legal defense if you are sued for the damages caused. Collision coverage pays for damages to your car caused by hitting another object. This can include accidents with other vehicles, guardrails, trees, or any other fixed object. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage pays for any damages or injuries you may sustain as a result of an accident caused by another driver who does not have insurance, or who does not have enough insurance to pay for your damages. Comprehensive coverage pays for damages to your car that are caused by anything other than a collision. This can include damage caused by storms, hail, flooding, fire, theft, vandalism, and animals. Comprehensive coverage also includes coverage for the loss of items stored inside your car. In California, auto insurance policies also frequently include Medical Payments coverage, which pays for your medical expenses if you are injured in an auto accident, as well as Personal Injury Protection, which pays for lost wages, rehabilitation costs, and death benefits. All of these coverage types are subject to the limits set by your auto insurance policy, so it is important to understand the coverage limits before signing up for a policy.
