What type of coverage is included in auto insurance policies?
Auto insurance policies vary in coverage type and amount from one insurer to another. However, some types of coverage are standard and must be included in most policies. Generally, auto insurance policies in Idaho must include liability coverage, uninsured motorist coverage, and medical payments coverage. Liability coverage is designed to protect a driver from facing legal or financial burdens following an at-fault accident. This coverage pays for damages and/or injuries that an individual causes another person in an accident. Uninsured motorist coverage protects a driver if they are involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver. Medical payments coverage helps pay for medical costs related to injuries that occur due to an auto accident, even if the insured driver is not at fault. In addition to the standard coverage required in Idaho, many auto insurance policies offer additional coverage options. These may include collision coverage, comprehensive coverage, rental reimbursement, and towing and labor coverage. Collision coverage helps to pay for the repair or replacement of a policyholder’s vehicle if it is damaged due to an accident. Comprehensive coverage helps to pay for damages that are not the result of a collision, such as from weather or theft. Rental reimbursement helps drivers pay for a rental car if their vehicle is not available due to an accident. Lastly, towing and labor coverage helps cover costs associated with towing a damaged vehicle and any labor costs related to repair the vehicle.
