What is the difference between a surety bond and an insurance policy?
A surety bond and an insurance policy are two different types of financial protections available in North Carolina. Both provide financial assistance in the event of a financial loss, but there are important differences between the two. A surety bond is a guarantee from a third party (the surety) to reimburse the customer for any financial loss they may suffer due to the failure of the party in breach of the agreement. For example, if a contractor does not complete a project or follow through with an agreement they may be required to post a surety bond. If they fail to fulfill their obligations, the surety is responsible for paying the customer for the losses incurred. An insurance policy works differently. An insurance company pays out financial compensation for unexpected losses or damages caused by an event. This could be the result of an accident, theft, or natural disaster. Insurers provide coverage for the policyholder, and they are responsible for paying out the necessary compensation based on the policy terms and conditions. The major difference between a surety bond and an insurance policy is that a surety bond is there to cover a certain agreement, while an insurance policy covers a variety of possible losses. Another important distinction is that insurance companies have more financial resources than surety companies, meaning they can pay out more quickly and in larger amounts.
