What are the laws regarding online privacy?

Online privacy is an important right in Ohio. In general, Ohio law requires websites and online service providers to protect the privacy of their users. This includes disclosing their personal information-gathering policies and practices in their Privacy Policy. Ohio also has a specific law, the Ohio Computer Crimes Law, which covers online privacy. This law makes it a crime to access or modify a computer or electronic system without proper authorization. It also criminalizes various forms of cyberstalking, identity theft, and other computer-related crimes. In addition, Ohio’s Information Technology Resources Use And Disclosure Act requires that businesses use reasonable security measures to protect personal information they acquire through electronic transactions. Ohio also requires businesses to notify customers if their personal information has been compromised. Under the Ohio Breach of Security Law, businesses must notify their customers if their personal information has been exposed as a result of security breaches. Lastly, Ohio also requires that employers provide a certain level of online privacy to their employees. Under the Ohio Computer Use and File Access Law, employers must provide access to their employees’ computer files and their personal information that is stored on company computers. Employees must be notified if the company intends to use their personal information for purposes other than performance of their job.
