What is the difference between venture capital and private equity?

Venture capital and private equity are two forms of investment that involve the funding of businesses in different ways. Venture Capital (VC) is an investment in smaller, more innovative businesses that are looking to expand and grow. They are typically start-ups with promising technology, products, or services. VC investments are typically provided in exchange for a stake of ownership in the business, with the expectation of a high return through successful execution of the company’s business plan. Private equity (PE) on the other hand is an investment in established companies that are already profitable and are undergoing some form of restructuring or transition. PE firms will provide a lump sum of capital to the company in exchange for ownership of a portion of the company. Unlike VC, PE firms are typically passive investors who do not provide any guidance to the company in terms of strategic guidance or coaching. Instead, they rely on the management team of the company for guidance. Both venture capital and private equity can be found in California, as well as other countries, and are regulated by the state’s investment law.
