How do I register a copyright?

In Michigan, you can register a copyright for your work by filing an application with the United States Copyright Office. The application is available online and can be completed in a few simple steps. First, you must submit an application and a deposit of the work you are claiming copyright to. This deposit will usually be at least one copy of the work as required by law. The deposit must be in a tangible form, such as a hard copy, a digital file, or a photograph. Second, you must pay the filing fee. The amount of the fee depends on the type of work you are registering and the method of registration. Third, the application must include a declaration that you are the author or copyright owner of the work and that you are the sole proprietor of the work. When the application and associated documents have been received and reviewed, the Copyright Office will register the copyright. The Copyright Office will then send you a Certificate of Copyright Registration which verifies the copyright and your ownership of the work. The Certificate of Copyright Registration also includes the date that the copyright was registered and a copy of the work that was submitted for registration.
