What is data protection?
Data protection is an area of the law that governs the use and storage of information, particularly sensitive information such as personal data and credit card numbers. Data protection exists to ensure that organizations, businesses and individuals keep this information secure and do not disclose it without proper authorization. Under Mississippi law, organizations must abide by data protection requirements or face potential legal ramifications. Generally, organizations must take reasonable security measures to protect data, inform users of data collection practices, and restrict use of personal information to a limited scope. Data protection also aims to empower individuals by giving them the right to access their personal data and decide how it is used. Individuals have the right to know what information is being collected and what it will be used for. They can request that information be corrected or deleted, and can decide who has access to their information. In addition to providing individuals with the rights to access, manage and protect their personal data, data protection laws also provide businesses with legal protections from data breaches. Businesses must comply with data protection regulations to minimize their risk of breach. By implementing these laws, both individuals and businesses can feel safer in their online activities.
