What rights do I have as a copyright owner?

As a copyright owner in North Carolina, you have the exclusive right to control the reproduction, distribution, public performance, or digital transmission of your work. This means that anyone else wishing to use your work must do so with your permission. If you discover that someone has used your work without permission, you can take legal action to stop the infringement, seek damages, and recover the costs associated with doing so. The copyright owner also has exclusive rights to prepare “derivative works” based on the original work. This includes making modifications or adaptations to the original work. Additionally, the copyright owner has the exclusive right of attribution, which means that any time someone uses your work, they must give you credit. In the event that the original work is sold or transferred to a third party, the copyright owner reserves the right to receive ongoing royalties for any subsequent public exhibitions or broadcasts of the work. The copyright owner also has the exclusive right to terminate the transfer agreement if the transferring party fails to abide by the terms of the agreement. Owners of intellectual property are also protected from unauthorized use of their work in other countries, as some countries have agreed to recognize and enforce copyrights. Lastly, the copyright owner is entitled to certain moral rights, such as the right to prevent blasphemy or misrepresentation of their work.
