What is a copyright duration?
Copyright duration is the length of time that a copyright is granted for an original work of authorship. A copyright is a form of intellectual property law that grants the creator of an original work the exclusive right to use, reproduce, and distribute that work. In the state of Iowa, copyright duration is determined by the federal government. Generally, the copyright duration is the author’s life plus an additional 70 years. If the work was created by more than one author, then the copyright duration is the life of the longest-surviving author, plus an additional 70 years. The copyright duration for works made for hire or anonymous works is 95 years from the date of publication or 120 years from the date of creation, whichever is shorter. It is important to note that copyright duration can vary depending on when the work was created and who created it. It is also important to note that copyright protection does not last forever—once the copyright duration ends, the work becomes part of the public domain and anyone can use it without needing permission from the original author. For this reason, it is important for creators to keep track of their copyright duration and renew their copyright as needed.
