What are the different types of patents?

There are three main types of patents in Florida within Intellectual Property Law. Utility patents cover any new or useful processes, machines, articles of manufacture, or compositions of matter. For example, new technology, a new type of car engine, a new type of plastic, or even a new type of plant, all would be covered by a Utility patent. Design patents are for any new, original, and ornamental design for an article of manufacture. An example of a design patent might be a unique shape of a car, a new pattern on a fabric, or a special shape of a computer. Plant patents are for any new variety of a plant. To qualify for a Plant patent, the plant must have been discovered or created in a cultivated area, meaning it was not found in the wild. Overall, patents are meant to protect innovators and inventors from others taking credit for their hard work. They are vital to protecting the integrity of businesses and providing security across a wide range of industries.
