What is an invention?
An invention is an original concept, idea, or item that is developed by an individual or entity and protected under Intellectual Property Law. In California, an invention is defined as any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, composition of matter, or any new or useful improvement thereof. In other words, it is something that can be applied or used to solve a problem or create something that did not exist before. Inventions are typically protected under patent, trademark, or copyright laws. Patents are used to protect inventions that are novel, non-obvious, and have some kind of utility. Trademarks protect a brand or logo that is used to distinguish one company’s products from another. Copyrights are used to protect original works of authorship such as music, books, and plays. Generally, patent applications require detailed descriptions and drawings of the invention, as well as a detailed explanation of how the invention works and how it can help solve a certain problem. In some cases, inventions may also require a prototype to demonstrate its usefulness. After a patent application is filed, it is reviewed and if approved, the inventor receives exclusive rights to the invention for a certain amount of time.
