What is a copyright registration?
A copyright registration is a legal action that protects authors and creators from having their original work reproduced and distributed without permission. In Rhode Island, a copyright registration is a way to protect your intellectual property from others who may wish to evoke it without your permission. A copyright registration is a formal declaration to the United States Copyright Office that a particular work is the original creation of an author, and that the author owns all rights to the work. When a copyright registration is made, it is added to the national registry as evidence that a work is the original creation of the author and that the author owns all underlying rights. Once a copyright registration is filed with the United States Copyright Office, the copyright holder is legally allowed to sue any individual or company that may attempt to use or exploit the work without permission. This legal protection makes it difficult for someone to copy your work and claim it as their own. Copyright registration also allows an author to assert their rights to the work in a court of law in the event that the copyright is violated. In Rhode Island, a copyright registration is an excellent way to protect your creative works from being copied and used without your permission. By registering your work with the United States Copyright Office, you are ensuring that you have the legal right to enforce your copyright and prevent others from using your work without your explicit permission.
