What is the scope of copyright protection?
Copyright is an exclusive legal right granted to an individual or group to control the reproduction, distribution, public performance, and adaptation of their original creative work. Intellectual property law in Texas protects the scope of copyright protection by preventing others from using or changing the original work without the permission of the copyright holder. Copyright holders are the only ones who are allowed to make copies, give permission for others to make copies, distribute the work, make adaptations of the original work (such as translations or adding music to a book), sell or rent the work, and perform or display the work in public (such as putting on a play or showing a movie). Copyright holders have the exclusive right to do these things and in some cases they can also control who else uses their work, and how they use it. In addition, intellectual property law in Texas provides the copyright holder with remedies for infringement of their exclusive rights. This could include the awarding of damages against the infringer, the issuance of an injunction to stop further infringement, and the destruction of all infringing materials. In some cases, copyright holders may also be able to receive additional remedies such as an accounting of all profits made by the infringer. As a result, businesses and individuals in Texas need to make sure they understand and comply with all aspects of copyright law in order to protect their intellectual property rights.
