What is the process for obtaining a license to become an insurance producer?

In California, individuals wishing to become an insurance producer must first obtain a license from the California Department of Insurance. To do so, they must complete an application, pay any required fees, and pass the California Life and Health Insurance Examination. The application can be completed online, and requires general personal information, including full legal name, social security number, contact information, and any prior insurance experience. The applicant must also provide residency, immigration status, and military status, if applicable. Criminal background checks are also performed by the Department of Insurance. The California Life and Health Insurance Examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, and must be completed in 3 hours. The exam covers general insurance principles and laws, as well as California-specific laws. Applicants must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly in order to pass the exam. Once all the requirements are met, applicants will receive a license from the Department of Insurance and may begin work as an insurance producer. They must also renew their license annually in order to continue to practice.
