What is the role of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)?
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) plays an important role in helping to ensure the well-being of the insurance business and its customers in Texas. The NAIC is a voluntary organization of the top insurance regulators from each of the states and territories in the United States. This organization was formed to promote uniformity in insurance regulation and to encourage cooperation between state insurance departments. The NAIC is responsible for developing model laws and regulations that help guide Texas’ laws and regulations. These models are used by each state to ensure that they are meeting compliance with NAIC standards, and that the rights of consumers are being protected. The NAIC also provides a forum for state regulators to discuss issues involving insurance regulation and to solve common problems. The NAIC also works to set standards for solvency (financial stability) of insurance companies, and to determine the minimum amount of cash and assets that insurance companies must keep on hand to avoid insolvency. The NAIC also investigates consumer complaints against insurance companies, and may impose fines or other sanctions if the complaints are found to be valid. The NAIC is committed to protecting the public interest and making sure that consumers are receiving adequate protection when they purchase insurance products in Texas. Without the NAIC setting and enforcing minimum standards of protection, consumers may not be receiving the full protection they expect and deserve.
