Is there a minimum level of coverage that is required by law?
Yes, Alaskan law requires a minimum level of coverage to ensure drivers are financially prepared to pay for damages caused by an accident. Vehicle owners are required to maintain a minimum coverage of $50,000 per person for bodily injury liability, $100,000 per accident for bodily injury liability, and $25,000 per accident for property damage liability. Alaskans must also maintain uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage of at least $50,000 per person for bodily injuries and $25,000 per person for property damage. This coverage gives drivers protection from another motorist who does not have adequate insurance or who is uninsured. It also provides the insured with medical payments coverage, which pays regardless of who is at fault in an accident and covers the insured’s medical expenses due to an accident. Alaskans are also required to carry personal injury protection (PIP). This covers medical bills for the driver, passengers, and pedestrians injured in an auto accident, regardless of who was at fault. Alaskan drivers must have at least $50,000 in PIP coverage. Drivers in Alaska should be aware of their current coverage. If their coverage falls below the required minimums, they may be subjected to fines and other penalties.
