What is the order of priority when dividing an intestate estate?

In Washington, the order of priority for dividing an intestate estate is set out in the Washington State statutes. The first priority is given to surviving spouses. If there is a surviving spouse, they will receive the entire estate. However, if there is no surviving spouse, the estate will be divided among the surviving children or grandchildren. If there are no surviving children or grandchildren, the estate will be split between the surviving parents. If there are no surviving parents, the estate will be divided among the surviving siblings or other close relatives. Finally, if no close relatives are alive, the estate will be divided among the surviving friends of the deceased. When a person dies without a valid will in Washington, their estate is divided according to the order of priority set out in the Washington State statutes. This is known as intestate succession law. The surviving spouse is always the first in line for dividing an intestate estate. If there is no surviving spouse, the surviving children and grandchildren will receive the estate. If none are alive, the estate will be divided among the surviving parents. If there are no surviving parents, the estate will be divided among the remaining relatives. Finally, if there are no close relatives remaining, the estate will be divided among the surviving friends of the deceased.
