How does international trade law differ from domestic trade law?

International trade law is a branch of the law governing the exchange of goods and services across international borders. It is distinct from domestic trade law, which governs trade within a single country. International trade law seeks to facilitate and promote the flow of goods and services among countries, while at the same time protecting the interests of those involved in international trade. This includes protecting intellectual property, regulating the import/export of goods, and resolving any disputes that arise. International trade law is based on a number of multilateral, regional, and bilateral agreements. These agreements, such as the World Trade Organization’s General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, outline the specific rules that govern international trade. As such, international trade law is much more complex than domestic trade law. Domestic trade law, by comparison, is relatively simple. It is governed by a single source of law, usually a country’s domestic laws or a region’s trade regulations. Domestic trade law does not need to consider the interests of multiple countries, meaning that it does not need to be as comprehensive or complex as international trade law. Ultimately, international trade law and domestic trade law have the same goals - facilitating and promoting trade - but the ways in which they achieve those goals are quite different. International trade law is complex, multi-layered, and heavily regulated, while domestic trade law is by comparison much simpler.
