What is the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)?
The Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) is an international pact between different countries to protect intellectual property rights (IPR). IPR are original ideas, inventions, creations or artistic works, such as music, movies, and books. TRIPS ensures that countries respect each other’s laws to protect IPRs, including the setting of minimum standards for those laws. TRIPS is an important part of international trade law because it acts as an incentive for creators and inventors. Without strong laws to protect their works, these people would not be able to make money off of their creations and inventions, and innovation would suffer. In addition, TRIPS promotes open trade and stimulates economic growth in countries around the world. In Indiana, the state legislature passed an Act to Promote Fairness in International Trade in 2016. This Act explicitly states that Indiana recognizes and complies with the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). It also reinforces the fact that Indiana respects and enforces national laws protecting IPRs. TRIPS is an important agreement that seeks to ensure that intellectual property is protected across the world. By promoting the fair and free trade of ideas and creations, TRIPS helps to ensure economic growth and stimulates investment and innovation. In Indiana, the state legislature recognizes that it is important to abide by international agreements that protect intellectual property and promote fair trade.
