What is the World Trade Organization Agreement on Trade Facilitation?
The World Trade Organization Agreement on Trade Facilitation (also known as the WTO TFA) is an international agreement that seeks to make global trading easier, faster, and more efficient. It was adopted in 2014 and has been in force since February 2017. The agreement is designed to reduce or eliminate certain obstacles to international trade, such as customs fees, long waiting times, and other unnecessary bureaucracy. The agreement binds signatories to a set of rules, procedures, and standards that seek to reduce trade costs and improve cross-border cooperation. For example, signatories must keep track of their trade-related laws and regulations, and publish them in a timely manner. Additionally, signatories must set up systems to track and monitor exports and imports in a way that is transparent and accessible to all parties involved. In Washington, local authorities can make use of the WTO TFA to simplify and expedite the process of trading goods and services with other countries. This could include setting up more efficient customs procedures, ensuring that all transactions are handled by qualified personnel, and introducing new technology and tools for trade facilitation. Ultimately, the WTO TFA seeks to reduce the costs of international trade and provide a more streamlined, efficient system for all involved.
