What is the goal of juvenile probation or parole?
The goal of juvenile probation or parole in California is to provide a safe, stable and constructive environment for young offenders to change their behavior and ultimately become contributing members of society. This goal is based on the premise that young people are less culpable for their behavior because of their developing brains and consequently require different treatment and rehabilitation from adults. Probation and parole supervision provide guidance, support, and accountability to youth to help them meet the conditions of their court orders. Juvenile probation officers assess a young person’s level of risk and needs and develop an individualized service plan that focuses on rehabilitation, which may include cognitive behvioral therapy, classes, skills training, and substance abuse treatment. The plan may also include educational and recreational opportunities to help young people develop age-appropriate, prosocial skills and experiences. Parole is similar to probation, but with a focus on maintaining public safety and providing aftercare supervision. Parole officers usually work closely with juveniles to ensure they are following the court-ordered conditions and provide support to help them successfully transition back into the community. In California, juvenile probation and parole systems are designed to provide youth with the skills, resources and networks necessary to avoid the criminal justice system and become productive and successful members of society.
