What is the difference between a juvenile detention center and a juvenile correctional facility?

In Tennessee, juvenile detention centers and juvenile correctional facilities are both used to house young offenders for crimes they’ve committed in violation of state laws. The main difference between the two has to do with the length of stay of the juvenile offender. A juvenile detention center is intended to be a temporary holding facility for the juvenile offender until their court date. This allows the juvenile to remain in a safe place, away from the outside world, until their case is determined in court. Generally, juveniles remain in a detention center anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. On the other hand, a juvenile correctional facility is a more long-term facility. If the court determines that the juvenile should receive a sentence, they are transferred to a juvenile correctional facility. This facility offers a more structured environment and consists of things like educational programs and rehabilitation programs, and juvenile offenders may be held here for months or even years. Juvenile offenders may also be released from juvenile correctional facilities back into society after a period of time. Therefore, a juvenile detention center and a juvenile correctional facility both serve the purpose of protecting and rehabilitating young offenders in Tennessee in accordance with Juvenile Crimes Law, but the determining factor is the amount of time spent in each facility by the juvenile offender.
