What is the difference between public and private international law?

Public International Law is the law governing relations between different states, international organizations and some non-state entities, such as certain ethnic groups. It is a system of rules and principles, which are created and enforced through agreements between different states and other international entities. Private International Law is the law governing conflicts between private entities with cross-border interests. It is a set of principles which determine the law applicable to international disputes which involve private persons or entities with cross-border interests. The main difference between Public and Private International Law is that Public International Law applies between states, while Private International Law applies between private entities. Public International Law defines the rights and duties of states, whereas Private International Law deals with the rights and duties of private individuals and entities across different states. Public International Law is concerned with the settlement of disputes between countries, such as war, diplomatic relations and human rights. Meanwhile, Private International Law is concerned with the settlement of disputes between private entities arising out of cross-border activities such as contracts, trade, family law, employment law and torts. In Washington, both Public and Private International Law are governed by the U.S. Code, which sets out the framework for international relationships between the state and other international entities, as well as between private entities. The Washington State Supreme Court also provides guidance on International Law in the state.
