What are the rights of a juvenile in court?

In Washington State, juveniles have several rights that they are entitled to during their court proceedings. These include the right to remain silent, the right to have an attorney present during any questioning, the right to have a parent or guardian present, and the right to have a trial by jury. Additionally, juveniles have the right to be informed of the charges against them and the corresponding penalties, the right to confront and cross-examine witnesses, the right to challenge evidence, and the right to appeal decisions. In addition to these rights, juveniles and their families are also provided with additional assistance when navigating the court system. This includes access to social services and other organizations that provide assistance such as the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, the Washington State Office of Public Defense, and the Washington Bar Association. Juveniles also have the right to have their court cases transferred to juvenile court when appropriate. This is to give them and their families more access to the resources and supports available to the juvenile court system. In the juvenile court system, a judge may waive a juvenile’s rights in unique cases. It is important for juvenile offenders to understand their rights during the legal process and to take advantage of the services and resources available to them. Juveniles should always be aware of the laws in Washington State and take their court cases seriously.
