What is the difference between a juvenile detention center and a juvenile correctional facility?

In North Carolina, there are two main types of juvenile facilities: juvenile detention centers and juvenile correctional facilities. While both types of facilities are meant to house minors who have committed criminal offenses, there are distinct differences between the two. Juvenile detention centers, also referred to as ‘juvenile halls’, are short-term facilities. They are places of confinement for juveniles who are awaiting court hearings. Within a juvenile detention center, youth are provided with educational and recreational activities as well as meals, and are typically subject to age-appropriate discipline. Upon a court’s decision, a juvenile may be released or transferred to a juvenile correctional facility. Juvenile correctional facilities are longer-term facilities that are used to house juveniles who have been committed to state custody and are sentenced to more than one hundred twenty days. The purpose of a juvenile correctional facility is to not only provide education, but also to rehabilitate and treat the sentenced juvenile. In accordance with North Carolina state law, juveniles must be provided with mental health services and have access to medical care. In addition to educational and recreational activities, these facilities also provide job training and drug treatment programs. The differences between a juvenile detention center and a juvenile correctional facility are varied. While both are designed to house juveniles who have committed criminal offenses, the duration of their stay and the types of services provided vary.
