What rehabilitation options are available to juveniles?

In South Carolina, juvenile law recognizes the importance of rehabilitation for juveniles that have committed crimes. Juveniles may be sentenced to probation, probation with special conditions, or suspended confinement. They may also be ordered to receive counseling or treatment. Probation is the most common rehabilitation option. A probation officer will monitor the juvenile’s behavior and make sure that they comply with their court orders. The probation officer may also provide the juvenile with counseling or treatment. In cases where a juvenile’s behavior is more serious, the court may order probation with special conditions. These conditions may include additional counseling, substance abuse treatment, residential treatment, or mental health treatment. The court will also order the juvenile to abide by rules such as maintaining a job or going to school. If the juvenile has committed a very serious crime, the court may order suspended confinement. This is a sentence of prison time, but the juvenile will not actually have to spend time in prison as long as they comply with all of the court’s orders. In this case, the court may require the juvenile to attend counseling, treatment, or residential programs. In South Carolina, juvenile law allows judges to choose the rehabilitation option that best fits the juvenile’s needs. Each juvenile’s case is considered individually and the court takes into consideration their criminal history and personal circumstances when determining the best way to serve justice and help the juvenile become a productive member of society.
