What is the role of a juvenile probation officer?
A juvenile probation officer is someone who helps juveniles, or minors under the age of 18, who have committed a crime or are at risk of committing a crime in Pennsylvania. The role of a juvenile probation officer is to assess the needs and behavior of the juvenile, offer guidance and counseling, and create an individualized plan in order to keep the juvenile from re-offending or becoming involved in further criminal activity. The responsibilities of a juvenile probation officer include monitoring the juvenile’s compliance with court-ordered programs, providing court reports on the juvenile’s progress, and conducting investigations in order to determine the juvenile’s level of risk. They may also work with social service, educational, health, and mental health providers, as well as the juvenile’s family. The primary goal of a juvenile probation officer is to ensure that juveniles are diverted away from criminal activity and to offer guidance that will help them lead law-abiding lives. This includes providing support to juveniles in making positive decisions, identifying resources to assist with responsibilities and goals, and connecting them to other support services and programs. Through such efforts, juvenile probation officers play a critical role in upholding the law and providing support to juveniles who are most at risk of becoming involved in further criminal activity.
