What is the minimum wage?
The minimum wage in Washington State is currently $13.50 per hour. This rate applies to all employees 18 years or older and to minors working more than 8 hours per week. All employees are entitled to receive at least the minimum wage rate. Employers must pay their employees at least the applicable minimum wage regardless of the type of job or the amount of hours worked. Employees who do not receive the applicable minimum wage rate may report their employer to the state’s Department of Labor & Industries. Employers must also pay employees wages for the time worked or services performed. If an employee works overtime, the employer must pay additional wages for the hours worked beyond the legal maximum workweek. The overtime rate is calculated at one-and-a-half times the regular rate of pay. If employers fail to pay their employees the required minimum wage, then the employee can file a claim with the state’s Department of Labor & Industries. If the claim is found to be valid, then the employer may be required to pay back wages, administrative fees and possible penalties. Washington State Law also requires employers to post the current minimum wage rate in the workplace. This helps ensure that all employees are aware of the applicable minimum wage rate in their state.
