Is there a minimum age requirement for employment?

In Florida, the minimum age requirement for employment is 14 years old. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity administers the state minimum wage laws and enforces compliance with child labor laws. The Child Labor Law applies to any business or individual who employs, licenses, or engages any minor to work in any job. Generally, minors under the age of 14 are not allowed to be employed. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. Minors under the age of 14 may be employed as actors or performers in motion pictures, television, theatrical, or other entertainment or theatrical productions as long as the minor has obtained a certificate of age from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Furthermore, minors under the age of 14 may work in certain earn-at-home programs if they have obtained permission from the Department of Economic Opportunity. However, the minor may only do work that does not interfere with normal school hours or with the minor’s academic performance.
