What are the rules for workplace drug and alcohol use?

In Mississippi, workplace drug and alcohol use is prohibited and employers are allowed to have drug-free policies dating back to 1988. All employers in the state are required to show evidence of drug and alcohol policies that are in place in the workplace. These policies usually include pre-employment drug testing. Drug testing in Mississippi is done by urine, hair or saliva. This type of testing is allowed to screen for any illegal drugs. Employers can also test for prescription drugs as long as the drug is evaluated to determine if it will have a negative impact on the job. Substance abuse policies should be communicated to all employees and must define what is considered a Reasonable Suspicion Drug Test. This basically means that if there is any reason to believe that a worker may be under the influence of a drug or alcohol, the employer has the right to conduct a drug test. Alcohol is not allowed to be present or consumed in the workplace and breaking this rule can result in disciplinary action or termination. Employers also have the right to forbid workers from drinking on the job or coming to work with alcohol in their systems. Overall, Mississippi workplace drug and alcohol polices are very strict and employers take a zero-tolerance stance on illegal drug and alcohol use in the workplace.
