Yes, there are regulations and laws related to advertising alcoholic beverages in the District of Columbia. The District of Columbia Alcoholic Beverage Control Act (ABCA) section of the law contains guidelines for alcohol-related advertising. The DC ABCA states that, when advertising alcoholic beverages, the following information must be included: • The name of the product; • Name and address of the seller; • Name and address of the producer; • A statement that the product is intended for those 21 years of age and older; • A statement that it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to consume or purchase alcoholic beverages; • A warning that pregnant women should not consume alcoholic beverages; • A disclaimer informing consumers that consuming alcoholic beverages can have adverse health effects. In addition, the DC Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) requires that all alcohol-related advertising shall not contain any material which is false, deceptive or misleading. Furthermore, all alcohol-related advertising must be inoffensive and not contain any language that promotes excessive drinking, management of drinking-age, or other alcoholic beverages in an irresponsible manner. Finally, when using any image of a person or people in an advertisement for alcoholic beverages, the person or people must be at least 21 years of age or older. Failure to adhere to these regulations may result in fines or other legal punishments.
