What is the purpose of taxation and how are taxes levied and collected?

The purpose of taxation is to raise funds for government services. This includes funding for infrastructure, public safety, social services, and other services provided by the government. In Kansas, taxes are levied and collected by the state, along with Kansas counties and cities. The state of Kansas levies taxes on personal income, real and tangible property, and certain sales and services. Personal income taxes are based on the taxpayer’s federal adjusted gross income, and are imposed on both residents and nonresidents of the state. In addition, the state collects corporate income tax, retail sales tax, gasoline tax, motor vehicle tax, controlled substance tax, and tobacco tax. Counties and cities in Kansas each have a different set of taxes they can impose. These taxes can include property taxes, sales taxes, utility taxes, and specialized taxes. Property taxes are based on the assessed value of a person’s land and/or property and are calculated in accordance with a tax rate set by the local government. Sales taxes are applied to goods and services that are purchased, and can vary based on the jurisdiction. Utility taxes are set by local governments and are often used to fund services in the community. Specialized taxes are imposed on specific activities, such as transactions involving real estate, motor fuel, alcoholic beverages, and cigarettes. All of these taxes are used to fund public services that are essential for Kansas communities. By paying taxes, citizens help ensure that the services they need are provided, and that their communities are safe and prosperous.
