Are there any laws related to the regulation of firearms?

In Montana, there are numerous laws which regulate the ownership and possession of firearms. The Montana Constitution states that citizens have the right to keep and bear arms, and the state legislature has passed several laws to protect and enforce this right. All firearms must be registered with the state, and Montana does not restrict the carrying of certain types of firearms. In terms of who can own a firearm, Montana law states that any individual who is at least 18 years of age and is not prohibited from possessing, transferring, or purchasing a firearm may lawfully possess or purchase a firearm. To purchase a firearm, the person must pass a criminal background check, and must have a valid driver’s license or state ID. In addition, Montana law requires individuals to get a concealed weapon permit in order to carry a concealed firearm. It is also illegal to carry a concealed weapon into any public building or school, unless the individual has a valid permit. Lastly, Montana law does place certain restrictions related to the types of firearms that can be owned and possessed. Some weapons, such as machine guns, sawed-off shotguns, and explosive devices are prohibited. By and large, Montana law is designed to protect the right of citizens to bear arms while also providing necessary regulations to ensure a safe and healthy community.
