What is a labor union?
A labor union is an organization made up of workers that collectively work to protect and advance the interests of their members. It does this by negotiating with employers for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. In South Carolina, labor unions are recognized and regulated by the state’s labor relations laws. Membership in labor unions is voluntary. Workers who join agree to pay dues and abide by the organization’s rules and decisions. Unions can negotiate with employers on issues like wages and hours, job safety, health benefits, and workplace conditions. Unions also protect their members from unfair discipline or termination of employment. In South Carolina, labor unions are regulated by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation. This agency is tasked with ensuring that labor organizations comply with the rules and regulations in the state. The agency also provides information and assistance to both employers and unions. Labor unions have existed in the United States for over 150 years. They are an important part of the American labor movement and have been instrumental in improving working conditions and wages and protecting workers’ rights. By joining together, workers have the strength to fight for the causes they believe in.
