What is a strike?

A strike is a form of protest in labor relations law in which the employees of a business collectively refuse to work until their demands are met. In Arizona, a strike cannot legally involve coercion or threats against the company or its employees. A strike usually occurs during contract negotiations between employers and employees, or when workers are looking for better pay or working conditions. It is one of the most powerful tools in the arsenal of organized labor. When a strike occurs, employees will often picket outside of their workplace to show their disapproval and solidarity. Employees on strike may also choose to participate in rallies or demonstrations in support of their cause. The employer may also choose to respond to the strike by bringing in replacement workers or hiring striking workers back under different terms. Negotiations can often continue even during a strike in order to reach an agreement and reach a resolution. Although a strike may cause a delay in production or services that a company provides, it is typically seen as an effective tactic in employment by those who support workers’ rights. It can also lead to the bargaining of better wages, working conditions, and job security for all those involved.
