What is a strike?
A strike is a form of protest used by workers to put pressure on their employer or an industry, typically when they require changes in their working conditions, pay and benefits. In North Carolina, a strike is defined by the North Carolina Labor Relations Act as a “refusal of employees in any unit to continue working, or the ceasing of work by organized employees, or any concerted activity by employees to induce, influence or coerce a change in employer’s policies or practices.” Strikes can be either economic or non-economic, depending on the demands of the workers. Economic strikes are used by workers to protest issues related to wages, hours, benefits, and safety. Non-economic strikes are used to protest issues related to management policies, union recognition, and job security, among other things. In North Carolina, private employers and unions need to follow certain procedures in order to hold a strike. The steps include giving notice to the employer and the government, and making sure that all public health and safety laws are followed. If these steps are not properly followed, the strike can be considered illegal and the participants may face penalties.
