What are my rights and responsibilities as a tenant?
As a tenant in Missouri, you are entitled to certain rights. These include the right to a safe living environment, the right to privacy, and the right to reasonable accommodation of any disabilities you may have. You also have the right to receive proper notice before your landlord enters your residence and to not be discriminated against based on your race, religion, national origin, sex, family status, or disability. Your responsibilities as a tenant include paying your rent on time, taking care of the property, and abiding by the terms of your lease or rental agreement. You must also follow all local, state, and federal laws related to tenant-landlord relationships, such as avoiding damaging the property, not making alterations to the property without your landlord’s permission, and notifying your landlord of any needed repairs. You also must not use the property for illegal purposes, violate any noise ordinances, or break any other rules set out in your rental agreement. It is important to note that your landlord also has rights and responsibilities which must be followed; including the right to collect rent, safeguard your security deposit, and receive notice before you move out. Therefore, it is important to have a good relationship with your landlord in order to ensure your rights and responsibilities as a tenant are respected.
