How do I file a complaint against a landlord?

If you are a tenant in Wisconsin and you believe your rights have been violated by your landlord, you may file a complaint with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). The most common complaints are those related to security deposits, maintenance, and other lease agreement violations. To file a complaint, you need to fill out and submit a Tenant Complaint Form. This form should provide details of the issues, such as the name and address of the landlord, the dates and details of the issues, and any other relevant information. Once the form is submitted, an investigator from DATCP will review the complaint and contact the tenant and the landlord. If the complaint cannot be resolved through informal mediation, DATCP may order the landlord to take corrective action or file a legal action in court. You may also choose to take legal action on your own by hiring an attorney. It is important to note that you must file a complaint within one year of the date of the alleged violation in order for DATCP to be able to help you. If you wait too long, you may not be able to file a complaint. No matter which route you take to file your complaint against your landlord, it is important to keep detailed records of all your communication with the landlord and any documents or evidence that can support your claim. Good luck!
