What are the laws governing tenant privacy?
In Missouri, tenant privacy is protected by law. The landlord must formally provide written notice to the tenant of their right to privacy and when they can expect their privacy to be respected. The landlord must also provide notice of when they shall enter the premises, except in emergencies or with the permission of the tenant. Under the law, landlords must give at least 24-hours notice prior to entering a tenant’s rental space. Additionally, landlords are generally prohibited from entering tenants’ premises between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. without express written consent from the tenant. The law also provides tenants the right to deny entry to anyone other than the tenant, the tenant’s family, and the landlord, unless the landlord has a court order granting access. Landlords also have the obligation to maintain the privacy of their tenants’ living space, and they must not disturb or interfere with the tenant’s quiet enjoyment of the property. In the event that a tenant’s privacy is violated, the tenant may be entitled to compensation for any damages associated with the violation. Additionally, they may also be able to take the landlord to court for the violation. Ultimately, the laws governing tenant privacy in Missouri provide tenants with important protections that they should be aware of and understand.
