What type of written notice must a landlord provide when raising a tenant’s rent?

In North Dakota, landlords must provide written notice if they want to increase the rent for a tenant. The amount of notice a landlord must provide depends on the terms of the lease agreement. Generally, a landlord must provide the tenant with at least 30 days’ written notice prior to an increase in rent. The written notice must include the reason for the rent increase, the new amount of rent, and the date the increase will take effect. In addition to providing written notice, landlords must also follow the terms of the rental agreement when raising rent. For example, some rental agreements may require a landlord to provide more than 30 days’ written notice or to give a tenant the right to terminate the lease before the increase takes effect. Lastly, there are a few situations where rent increases are not allowed without the tenant’s written consent. For example, if a tenant has lived in a unit for at least one year, then the landlord cannot increase rent without the tenant’s written agreement. Therefore, landlords must provide clear written notice if they want to increase the rent and they must follow the terms of the rental agreement when doing so. Additionally, in some cases the tenant’s written agreement may be required before a rent increase can take effect.
