What are the legal requirements to get married?
In Indiana, there are several legal requirements for a couple who wishes to get married. First, they must both be at least eighteen years of age, or sixteen or seventeen years of age with parental and judicial consent. Both of the partners must go to the Circuit Court Clerk’s office at least sixty days prior to the proposed date of marriage to obtain a license. This requires a valid government-issued ID and Social Security card or passport. The fee for the marriage license varies by county, though it generally costs around $19. In addition, both partners will need a witness present at the ceremony and the person performing the ceremony must complete and return the marriage license to the court clerk within sixty days of the ceremony. If one or both partners have had a previous marriage, they must provide documentation that the marriage has been terminated (such as a divorce decree). If one or both partners are not US citizens, they must provide additional documentation in order to prove their identity and their citizenship or visa status. In Indiana, same-sex marriage is legal. The rules for same-sex marriage are the same as for opposite-sex marriage, though couples may need to provide additional documentation depending on the immigration status of either partner.
