What are the legal requirements to get married?
In Texas, couples looking to get married must meet certain legal requirements in order to legally tie the knot. First, the couple must be of legal age, meaning individuals must be 18 years of age or older in order to marry without parental consent. They must also obtain a valid marriage license from a county clerk’s office. This license must be obtained at least 72 hours prior to the ceremony and can only be used within that 72-hour period. Financial obligations also come with getting married in Texas, as the cost of a marriage license varies from county to county and is typically around $80. In addition, if either party has been previously married, the divorce decree or death certificate of the former spouse must be presented. If both parties are unable to appear in person to obtain the marriage license, they may fill out an absentee affidavit for which they must provide valid identification. Once all the requirements are met and the marriage license obtained, the couple can then proceed to get legally wed.
