What are the rights of a non-spouse in a marriage?
In Washington, non-spouses have limited rights when it comes to marriage. Generally, non-spouses do not have the same rights with regards to marriage as a spouse who is legally married. These rights could include the right to file joint taxes, the right to make medical decisions, and the right to manage bank accounts and other financial matters. Non-spouses do, however, have important rights in the event of a divorce. Non-spouses may be able to assert a claim for alimony or spousal support. Washington law also includes a provision that allows non-spouses to protect their financial rights, such as unpaid wages or services provided. In some cases, a non-spouse may be able to claim a share of any joint bank or investment accounts. Additionally, non-spouses can also assert their rights with regards to the division of property in a divorce. Washington law allows for the division of marital property and other assets that were accumulated during the marriage. Non-spouses who contributed to marital assets may be entitled to a portion of the assets. To summarize, non-spouses in Washington do have some rights with regards to marriage. These rights are limited and largely depend upon the particular circumstances of the case. Non-spouses may have the right to assert a claim for alimony and the division of assets, in addition to the right to protect their financial rights.
